Caliph al-Mutawakkil built it between 859 and 861 in his new city of al-Ja’fariyya north of Samarra, with a spiral minaret like the Malwiya but smaller.
Rows of brick arcades still frame its courtyard, and it is part of the Samarra Archaeological City World Heritage site.
