It holds the tombs of Imams Ali al-Hadi and Hasan al-Askari; its golden dome was among the largest in the Islamic world.
It was bombed in 2006 and 2007 and has since been rebuilt. It stands in Samarra, near the city’s World Heritage archaeological sites.
