Nur al-Din Zangi built it around 1172, and its leaning minaret, al-Hadba (“the hunchback”), became the emblem of Mosul.
The mosque and minaret were destroyed in 2017 and rebuilt under UNESCO’s “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” initiative, reusing original bricks where possible.
