A closed salt lake in the Samawah desert with no river flowing in or out, fed by groundwater and sitting higher than the land around it, hence its name, the “pearl of the south”.
Tradition says it dried up on the night the Prophet Muhammad was born. Most of its water vanished in 2022 through drought and groundwater depletion, as the satellite image shows.
